A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical energy. If the mechanical energy is used to produce electricity, the device may be called a wind generator or wind charger. If the mechanical energy is used to drive machinery, such as pumping water, the device is usually referred to as a windmill or wind pump. Developed for over a millennium, today’s wind turbines are manufactured in a range of vertical and horizontal axis types. The smallest, or micro turbines, 1kW and below, are used for applications such as battery charging, while small wind turbines, generally 5kW to 100kW are tied to the grid – connected to the breaker box of your home or business.

Some Small Talk…

As far as we’re concerned, there is nothing small about a 100 kW Northwind, with its 68’ diameter blade and 16,000 lbs of tower top weight – and really, there is nothing small about a 10kW Bergey either, with a 23’ diameter blade, and weighing in at 1100 lbs. But for our purposes, we’re going to consider a small wind system to be in the 5kW – 35kW class, with Annual Energy Output (AEO), the amount of electrify measured in kWh produced in a year, ranging from around 12,000 to 120,000 at an average annual wind speed of 12 mph.

The turbine is just one part of a wind-electric system and is absolutely useless without the tower, electronics and wiring etc that converts the wild A/C or D/C coming off the tower into the smooth 3 phase electricity that runs a home or business… but it all starts where the wind hits the rotor. And in almost every case, that rotor has 3 blades and is oriented on a horizontal axis as in the water pumping windmills of the frontier and almost every commercial turbine in the world. If someone is trying to sell you a wind-electric system that resembles anything like the image to the right, say no thank you!

A recent study indicated that there are at least 74 windturbine manufacturers in the United States offering products, plus a comparable number of non-U.S. companies that sell in the states. That same study also indicated that only 14 companies “have begun sales,” meaning they actually have something to sell other than a computer simulation on their Web site, a prototype, or “vaporware.” In other words, only one in five small-wind companies in the states really have a product that is available.

What’s Really Important

Get Natural Energy Wind and Solar ONLY deal with turbine manufactures whose turbine technology is robust, and proven based on 10,000′s or in some cases 10,000,000′s of operational hours. Please trust us when we say there is no next great or killer application when it comes to wind-electric systems, the laws of physics are just that – if a representative or manufacture’s turbine performance claims seem to good to be true, and cannot be independently verified by a certified body, then they are false and misleading, and unfortunately they are numerous.

The bottom line – let us help you choose a system that is robust, simple, has a low cut-in wind speed and above all reliable!
